Why Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is a unique system of health care, promoting natural healing and prevention of disease. Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine (NDs) are trained as primary care general practice doctors who use a variety of non-invasive natural therapeutics to holistically treat both acute and chronic health conditions. Naturopathic medicine differs from traditional medicine by the philosophy utilized to guide treatment. In traditional medicine, treatment is designed to take away symptoms, many times utilizing pharmaceuticals or surgeries. These methods are valuable, even live-saving and serve an important role in health care. In Naturopathic Medicine, the focus on why the symptom exists and the cause of the illness drives the treatment.
Special evaluation is utilized with each patient which may include a closer look at traditional labs or using non-traditional testing to understand symptoms or trends in health. Many times, diet and lifestyle changes are the focus for treatment, which takes time and hard work, but the payoff is greatest.
Naturopathic medicine combines traditional wisdom with modern science to optimize treatment. It often uses a blend of therapies, which may include any of the following: botanical medicine, bodywork, lifestyle and nutrition counseling, hydrotherapy, biotherapeutic drainage, homeopathy, and physical medicine.
Ultimately Naturopathic Medicine focuses on long-term wellbeing for the individual patient. The wish for every patient to achieve a high level of wellness. What this means is different for each person but it includes the ability to live life to the fullest and optimize life’s goals.
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what this world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman.
The six principles of Naturopathic Medicine are:

- Identify and Treat the Cause of Illness
- Treat the Whole Person
- Recognize the Body’s Inherent Wisdom to Heal
